How to read this comparison
Every CMS vendor lists "AI features" on their site in 2026. That's table stakes. What separates real platforms is whether the AI is bolted on (generate text in an editor box, ship to manual review) or architectural (generation, audit, visibility, and execution share state). We're scoring each platform on five dimensions:
- Editorial workflow — how a non-developer ships a page change end to end.
- SEO depth — schema editing, redirects, audit, sitemap, internal linking.
- AI native features — generation, visibility tracking, brand-voice tuning.
- Total cost — sticker price plus realistic plugins, integrations, and labor.
- Lock-in risk — how hard it is to leave.

What it's for: teams with in-house engineering and a need for plugin breadth.
Real cost: $35 to $100/month hosting + $850 to $1,200/year in plugin licenses + dev labor. All-in: $250 to $700/month for a small business site.
Strengths: 60,000+ plugins, open source, massive community, no vendor lock-in, theme variety.
Weaknesses: security surface is huge, plugin maintenance is constant, AI features fragmented across 8 separate plugins (Yoast AI, Rank Math AI, Jetpack AI, Elementor AI), no managed-change workflow, no AI visibility tracking, no unified audit log.
Verdict: still the right call if you have a developer and need niche plugins. Wrong call if marketing is filing tickets and waiting.
